saturday, may 31

whoa, it's been too long here. you know it means that i've been running around barely catchin up on stuff. very little sleep thursday nite in prep for class on fri. i really must break the vicious cycle.

the italian job

after class on friday i met up and kicked it with liao from my old sg. we went to get some brazilian bbq from farmer's market (a great meal) and saw the italian job (a great movie). this was probably the most exciting car chase scene i've seen...topping the matrix reloaded. it sorta feels like a feature length commercial for the mini, but that's ok, cuz those mini cars are so beautiful. i want to get one even more so now, once i leave AC and reenter the paying world.

the movie was really enjoyable. funny. action packed. and also educational...learn about the birth of napster. too funny. go see this movie fast. but don't see it at the pacific theater at the grove. regular admission ticket prices on weekends (they especially gauge you) is $11.50. that's way too much for a just standard level modern theater (that's not the arclight). boo.

back in the no sleep trap

2 and a half hours of sleep last nite. i know, i know, i do it to myself. this is what i get for not doing any work at all over the past weekend. cramming last minute for my 8am class. of course i think i also push myself really hard to get a lot of work done, sometimes more than others. the good thing is that i'm at a pretty good place now in terms of my progress. i think better than some of the rest of the class.

one of the projects for my graphic design 8am class is to do a poster about AC. i think mine might be about how some of us fall into slightly sado-masochistic tendancies, depriving ourselves of sleep and other needs at this design school boot camp.

don't let this scare those of you who are considering applying to AC. i think i'm a slightly more hard core on the sacrificing sleep thing, than some others. there are some classmates who go to sleep around 10pm each nite, regardless if they're work is done. i think i care too much... sigh.

tony goes 3D

three decades that is. today. happy bday dude. and congrats on just getting into ucla for film school! seems like you have it all that you've been aiming for... a girl... an open door to your movie career dreams. you're definitely blessed!

i hope all's as well for me when i hit the 3D mark. at least i'll be done with AC.

weekend firsts

the solo cinema experience

saturday nite i went to a movie by myself for the very first time. it was ok. an artsy movie...cremaster 1 and 2. i don't think any of my non-AC friends woulda liked it. i decided to go on my own, sice it was a last minute thing, that i felt i couldn't pass up (since it was the very last nite that it was showing) and it was just easier to go by myself. it wasn't too bad ging on my own. i got to sit as close up as far as i wanted. you just don't really have anyone to help pass the idle time before (and during intermission). you also don't have anyone to talk to afterwards to discuss thoughts on the movie. how good it was. how bad it was. what you particularly liked or were intrigued by.

first LA bbq

with memorial day comes the bbq. i went to my first ever bbq in LA. the dudes from my church (mosaic) life group threw a bbq bash at their place. it was cool. the perfect thing to kick back and relax and chill. bump into some people i haven't seen for a while. be surprised by a couple of random connections and seeing familiar faces. meet a bunch more people who go to the same church as me. (i don't know that many.) also meet some new faces and friends of friends.

first LA street festival

one thing i really enjoy is exploring street festivals. i like checkin out the different arts booths and seeing slices of life from all over the community gathered all together under the sun. SF has a ton of cool ones. (the best one should be coming up in july...the fillmore st jazz and art festival). this weekend pasadena had a pretty good one...the old pasadena summer fest. it had a sports zone (kinda lame), a jazz festival section (very cool), a taste of summer (not the best deal), and a family fun festival. hit it up yesterday with jerry...but didn't have enough time...so i went back today by myself after the bbq. it was cool. chilled and listened to some pretty cool jazz for free.

went solo cuz i didn't know of anyone else who woulda enjoyed just sitting and hearing the performances. it was very relaxing. did a bunch of sketching and mark making explorations. i really need to get out of the apartment as much as possible when it comes to doing creative work.

the memorial day LA life weekly

eating and hanging out in the sunny southland...went to a short film fest at ucla. chicken saves the world rocked... at the nuart, i saw matthew barney's famous, artsy cremaster 1 & 2...beautifully shot but a little too out there for me...kicked it at the old pasadena summer fest. free jazz. yay. expensive food booths and overcast weather. boo...hung out on the westside with visiting lumps...as you can guess, no work was done this weekend. >> all that in 65 pix of playtime from the past week.

the end of two weeks in bohemian europe: album 7

day 10-12: got back into prague. train station was kinda scary past midnight. hit up the really cool museum of communism. we got some cool looking czech bottles and cans we got from a grocery store. walked across the st charles bridge to stare mestro around sunset. chilled at a pretty cool restaurant called bazaar. hung out in an orange bar called cheers. flew home by myself the next day. ate a frankfurter at my stop over in frankfurt. it was a good trip. >>149 pix of prague and the plane ride home

that's it! any thoughts? i wonder how many ppl made it thru all the albums. sunday nite we'll return to our regularly scheduled photo life weekly programming.

two weeks in bohemian europe: albums 5 and 6

day 8-10: trained into bratislava. a really charming capital city which still has a lot of old europe charm. stayed on a house boat. saw some sights but not as many as the other places. ate well. chilled at medusa, a cool modern restaurant. >> 139 pix of bratislava, slovokia

day 10:checked out an austrian concentration camp in mauthausen. definitely thought provoking. three of us stuffed ourselves into one of the little bunks where three men would sleep. a real experience walking around the gas chambers. audio tour was helpful. afterwards we all enjoyed most - apple wine. took the train thru the beautiful sunset-kissed austrian countryside. i chatted with a czech grandmother in german for over an hour. >> 62 pix of mauthausen, austria and a really nice train ride

tomorrow: the final day in prague.

day 6-8: hopped on a few trains to get to vienna. a different grand, classical feel than the other places. everythings pretty expensive. first meal was tafelspitz - emperor's boiled beef dish. we hung with a girl from shanghai traveling around the second day. heard the vienna boys choir. paid too much to see a lot of exhibits. >> 137 pix of vienna, austria

tomorrow...more old europe charm in bratislava and the austrian concentration camp mauthausen.

deceived by the matrix

don't trust the computers. darn tricky things. a glitch in the movie matrix will make you wake up at 3am, drive 25 min out to hollywood at 4am, and find out that "5:00 am Wed 5.14.03" is illogical code for an early thursday (5.15) screening. i guess we're going back tomorrow early. darn computers!

don't call us past 9 pm tonite b/c we'll be sleeping early again. crud.

reloaded before sunrise

j and i are gonna see what i believe to be the first showing of the matrix open to the public in america. woo hoo. we bought tix for tomorrow (or tonite's) show for 5am at grauman's chinese theater!

yeah...we probably have to get there at 4am. i crashed around 11pm last nite woke up early around 6:30 am today to condition myself for tonite. i'm gonna sleep early maybe around 9 or 10 (and pretend i'm in another time zone again) in order to be awake for the matrix reloaded.

why the kooky time? i bet it's a hype thing at the biggest theater in hollywood, so that they can be all over the morning news wed. it officially comes out thur but a lot of theaters are having preview screenings the day before. it's over a 2 hour movie, so we should be getting out of the theater about 7:25 am by my calculations. just in time for j and me to head straight to school for our 8am classes. heh heh heh.

i also have a mighty long day ahead tomorrow. an 11 hour school day which ends at 7pm. hopefully my classes end early!

anyone wanna join us? buy your tix on moviefone. another plus is that it's a bargain matinee! woo hoo!

i wonder which sf people would have been up for seeing the early early show.

traveling on the cheap

do you have wanderlust like me and wanna see the world? frommers just wrote about flybudget.com which collects info on the budget airline carriers. way cheaper than expedia and priceline for sure.

another alternative is to travel as a courier. if you can limit yourself to your carry-on, and can travel last minute very cheap or even free. i'm thinking about signing up. i think i've got the ideal situation when i have my 3 week term breaks as a student.

air meals

here's an interesting site reviewing airline meals. lufthansa kinda sucks.

purple hair

one fashion thing i noticed while looking for hair dye is that the latest color over there seems to be purple. there were a lot of shades of purple offerings. if i had realized that they don't offer that color here in the states, i woulda bought a few sets. i think it'd be cool to have a hint of dark purple in your hair. something subtle. definitely different and stylish.

reved up and ready to go

got back to the apartment around 11 tonite. it took us 7 hours to get caravan down here. but that was due to heavy traffic for a stretch on the 5, a gas break, a dinner stop at mike's roadhouse cafe in kettleman city, and a much needed bathroom and caffeine break right before the grapevine. it was a fabulous 3 week break and altho i'm exhausted from the drive (wonder if it's cuz of jetlag lingering), i'm charged up to begin the summer term at AC. (yes, AC goes year-round. no big break for me.)

it was really great seeing friends and family. getting a chance to be immersed to new cultures, art, architecture, languages. two weeks in bohemia was just right for me. at the end i was looking forward to going home. to spend a couple of days in sf and then to get to LA. to get back to the life i've grown accustomed to here. to be challenged and stretched in all of the right places. i do feel refreshed and ready to endure an even tougher 14 week term up ahead.

the best of bohemia rhapsody

the picturesque, postcard moments blazed into my brain forever from my eastern europe trip...

* traveling the beautiful austrian countryside by train and seeing the sunset. so amazing and beautiful. the roar and rush coming thru the open window. the golden sun setting on the rolling brushes and hills of green.

* talking to the czech grandmother in german for 90 minutes. she was enthusiastic to speak and learn about us. i struggled for the words learned a decade ago to come back into my brain. it was incredible to make the connection to her that we believe in the same God, and under him all is good. she gifted us with two fresh apples from her bag...which turned out to be the perfect dinner snack for us after we got into our hotel after midnight.

* the alphonse mucha museum. an enlightening and inspiring experience to learn about the incredible gifts, abilites, vision, and passion of this famous, czech art nouveau artist.

* filling my belly in memorable setttings. drinking apple most (wine) at a garden vineyard cottage restaurant. eating roasted goose in a renaissance castle cellar envrionment. taking in the environment at bazaar in prague. eating authentic slovokian fare at a tavern in bratislava with jazz music enriching the background. eating fish and taking in the modern fusion/italian cool environment at palmenhaus.

* the golden streets. walking at night and exploring the dark shadows and warm incandescence of the cobble stoned streets.

* breathtaking architecture and views. walking thru the dark gardens of cesky krumlov. seeing the disney-esque castles. views of pointy, tiled roofs. (it sorta felt like i was in shrek!)

i guess that's just at top of mind right now. try to imagine what all that might be like. hopefully you'll be able to download the movie/slideshow (which i have yet to make). looks like i'll be quite the busy bee this week...even if i don't have any assignments at all.

* had a pretty good time at manthausen, the concentration camp. very moving
* we drank alcoholic most. (apple-wine). pretty cool place.
* rode on a train throught the gorgeous austrian countryside and watched a spectacular sunset
* talked to a czech grandmother for about an hour and a half in my half-forgotten (but quickly returning) german. i think we might be postcard buddies now. or maybe she'll learn how to use the internet and read my blog.
* back to prague. lugged a lot of luggage from the train station past midnight. kind of a scary place.
* did some shop hopping today and strolling around. last dash for stuff, like belated birthday gifts.
* authentic gulash at a tavern. it wasn't too bad.
* museum of communism was pretty darn cool.
* great dinner meal at bazaar, a really interestingly designed cellar environment. piano playing was great.
* walked by a couple of jazz places. maybe hit up one more nite spot then watch some czech music videos before i crash.
* catching a flight tomorrow morning by myself. hope i have an interesting seat buddy.

finishing up in bratislava

we're at a cybercafe again. girls are figuring out where we're gonna stay wed nite and also the train schedule.

one very different thing that we have to get used to is that you have to flag the food servers down to get the bill. even after they clear your dishes, they don't come by to bother you at all until you request the check. maybe b/c the culture here is to barely tip, so service is slow and it's less work for the servers the longer they wait. it's pretty much been our experience everywhere.

still more food

tonite we ate at some pub place. i had some roasted good goose breast with potato pancakes. earlier today i chilled with erica at a really cool restaurant/bar place called medusa. very modern. well designed. it was good to get off the feet after spending a couple of hours roaming around the shopping streets trying in vain to find something.

ok. das ist alles fur jetzt. tomorrow to mauthausen, a concentration camp in austria. then back to prague probably.

1:10 PM ::

back at an internet cafe again. a lot of times i get to blog/check mail while the girls look up transportation and accomodations. but this time suzanne is off getting stamps and erica is getting chinese food. (we're in bratislava right now, the capital of slovokia.) i was at this cybercafe last nite, but couldn't blog since it closed at midnight, and i couldn't find one open past 00:00. oh well. it's less than $2 an hour here. and i get free tea too.

slovokian explorers

after a bunch of changes to the rest our itinerary (we're now going to nix budapest), we decided to go to bratislava yesterday. after about an hour here, we decided to extend our stay to two nights. it's really great here. we learned about this place from the recent article in frommer's budget travel magazine. it's so great here. it definitely still has all the charm and quaintness of old europe that has faded away to a degree from the other places. everything is also a lot cheaper than vienna, which is so nice. we're ordering full nice meals for about $6-7. this place isn't as overrun by the tourism that prague has sufferred from too. we're eating really well here too. probably b/c i really want to explore nice places.

people don't know english here as well as the other places, but that's ok. bratislava is a city of 5 million i think. i think it used to be 15 million at one point. theres a university here so there are a lot of young people around. there definitely is a lot of energy and vigor to this place...i think just back before 89 it was run by communists.

the architecture is fabulous here. the buildings and shops are clutstered like you might find on citywalk, but older and quainter. the area that we're in right now is very clean and quaint. at night, it's similar to cesky krumlov in that the streets are basked with the warm blanketing glow of the incandescent street lights.

we walked over to the downtown area, which is more like a normal downtown area in another city...but still has some of the decorative building facades. today we explored another castle which was cool. the girls start imagining themselves as cinderella and living here. saw a few museums in the place. one was about slovokian history. back during wwII, slovokia was part of hitler's "new europe" empire. there have been a lot of power turnovers here. i do agree with the budget travel article's surmise of the place...as one of the last cheapest places on earth...and that it's been an ugly duckling that's coming into it's own beauty.

experiential eaters

as many of you can tell already, i value my eating experiences. it's not just about stuffing your tummy or getting nutrition to survive, but it's also about exploring culture in a stimulating environmental setting. also opportunities to people watch, listen to music, relax and chill. it's about ambiance and vibe of a place. and its nice to find places like that. i just gotta flip open to the frommers recommended eating experiences and best of places. lonely planet really doesn't help us that much at all. we've tried. but anyhoo...it's good to eat in foreign countries, especially when it's in your favor money wise.

stuff i've been eating here...potato gnocchi...turkey stuffed with cheese, caviar, and salmon...the food here is pretty hearty. we've been getting some veggies too.

boat dwellers

i guess we're living it up a little on this leg of our bohemian tour. we're staying in hotel gracia, a boat hotel. sorta like being on cruise ship that's docked all the time. it definitely is pretty darn nice. there's also a pretty big complimentary breakfast which was great. more than the continental breakfast fare (bread, cheese, pate, ham, tea) with some eggs, juices, some sorta wiener, and sweet rolls. good stuff.

the girls complain about being seasick when they look out the window. you see the river flowing by. it's pretty nice. the motion doesn't faze me at all. ha.

cool culture sponge

it's really nice to be able to watch some tv in the room. i really like checking out the music video stations. if you've been with me in thailand or some other country, i can get pretty glued to the tv. i like to check out the popular culture evident in the mass media, particularly music. also looking for some cool new thing that i might be able to learn from or adapt. maybe for my own personal style of dress or designing.

a lot of the music here played in restaurants, stores, and on tv is coming from america or western europe. there's a lot of english and popular songs played. some older songs too. lots of top 40 music. i take particular notice to the dance music. kinda looking to buy some european cd now. particularly so that i'll have a cool soundtrack to make a few little movies using my 1000 pictures that i'll have by the end of the tv. hopefully i'll be able to use my images in my recorded image class if i take it this term.

ah the girls just came back. gotta wrap this up. they're reading over my shoulder as i continue to blog. erica has her kung pao chicken leftovers. she claims that it was good.

the getting to know you

when you travel around with just a couple of people, you usually really get to know them...well, i guess depending on your travel buds...how open they'll be. things we've talked about...fears (e.g. losing my teeth), regrets (missed opportunities), family, friends (disappointments, social landscape, closest ones), and of course the quirks and personal lingos. you gotta continue to share usually, b/c you run out of stuff to talk about.

travel flashbacks

traveling in another country and encountering a new experience makes me flashback to a lot of my past experiences in the past few years traveling to other countries. sometimes it's in discussion. sometimes it's the sensation of seeking out cool places. the experiences of looking for cool night spots, currency conversions, menu deciphering, and night exploring recalls a lot of other past, memorable times...
* roaming and exploring around japan...sight seeing, exploring the small seaside town of ushimado
* staying out all night my final night in bangkok...exploring with a bud lots of interesting places while the rest of the group slept away in the hotel. sorta like a before sunrise experience i guess.
* exploring and looking around the streets in beijing...popping into local places, and looking for the cool and new.

anyhoo...i'll be able to add a host of experiences of adventure and exploration travel from central europe to the memory depository of my mind. and i'll have a heck of a lotta pix to document nearly everything too. it's a shame how a lot of the past experiences and stimulation can fade after a while. being here definitely brings back pleasant memories of traveling. being here also makes me think about future trips...e.g. western europe (probably in two or three years), returning to thailand (possibly very soon). i wonder how long i'll be able to keep it up in life.

sunday, may 4

the Wiener hostel traveler life

my feet feel like they're flattening from all the hooving around vienna. sometimes in circles. we got in yesterday. barely caught some of our buses and trains...but thats living life on the edge. came to the youth hostel, which seems more like the real hostel experience. single sex rooms...so we have new roommates.

the girls met this girl lilian from shanghai who's here on vacation. we hung out with her for the day today, went to church, toured the sights, took a bunch of photos, and talked about culture and faith some. meeting new fellow travelers definitely adds to the experience. you get a chance to compare perspectives on life and the world, as well as share tips.

in line for cafeteria-style breakfast this morning at the hostel, got to talking to carrie, a student from seattle, who's here for a few months. she's with a big group from her school traveling around europe. that would have been a cool experience to do when i was in school. on this trip...my travelmates and i talk about different things...one was if you had any regrets or do-overs, what would those be. one would definitely to take advantage of more travel opportunites earlier on as a student. i'm lucky that i still qualify for a few discounts still as a student, but once you hit 26 that span is about up. (so if you're still a quarter-century or less...travel as much as you can...particularly in europe.) i think traveling definitely enriches your life and has big ramifcations on how you live and what you do. otherwise one would just be in the dark of what else is out there.

i kinda hope that whomever i eventually marry, will have traveled to a lot of the places that i've been to, so that we can mostly spend our traveling times exploring new places.

lots of beef

we ate tafelspitz last nite. the vienese specialty of boiled beef cooked in different spices and vegetables. we went to the place recommended by frommers, which i still swear by. it was really good. last nite was probably the best and nicest meal that weŽll have out here. even tho we're all walking a lot, we might have gained some weight from the eating.

it's nice traveling with girls. a lot of times i get to eat the leftovers off of their plates.

vienna boys choir

went this morning to a church service to hear the vienna boys choir. that was cool. they sounded pretty good from the tv and speaker overflow standing room in the hallway. hecka crowded. at least i didn't have to pay money to hear them. at least that was free.

so much geld

vienna certainly is nice. but it's different from what i saw in before sunrise. in that movie it looked a bit more like prague...more cobblestone and smaller streets to explore. it's also so expensive here. not as expensive as tokyo...but like a lot more of what it seemed to be in prague. all of the stinkin museums and palaces charage a lot for admission. like 5-8 dollars for each ticket. i save a buck or two as a student...but that's it. man, i think we spent as much money today as if we had gone to disneyland. well, disneyland for a so-cal resident price, maybe.

last nite in vienna

still gotta figure out how we're getting to bratislava (the capital of slovokia) tomorrow. erica wants to go live life on the edge and drink some wine. maybe she'll have two sips this time. maybe when she gets back, people will see a whole new her. we'll see how much i can change her. ha.

saturday, may 3

a moving from cesky krumlov to vienna

cesky krumlov was pretty enjoyable. the second largest castle...second only to prague castle...is here. its very disneyesque and very pretty. the town has a strong renaissance feel. sort of like you might find in disneyland...but all real. a lot of things are catered to tourism here...but it feels a little nicer than prague. things are about half the price of prague here. its so cheap. i had a small hamburger, potato salad and a drink for under 2 dollars.

did a lot of walking around. my nike acg sandles are helping my feet survive better than my steve madden thin soled shoes.

ate at a medieval cellar like pub attached to the castle gardens. candlelight. cheese was strange. food was good. beer was good...afterwards ran around the closed off gardens.

a lot of things here remind me of spirited away. maybe its the medieval town feel. the empty streets at nite. the slightly spooky shadows and lighting. its all very cool.

helped erica dye her hair. i used some on myself too. she picked black cherry. i think we should have gotten something brighter, like a dark purple. is that the latest color in the states? it seems like it was the newest loreal feria color here. feria is only 6 dollars here. what a bargain.

at nite time here and in prague...there is a warmish yellowish incandescent glow cast all over everything. makes for some pretty good pictures.

i dreamt a few times last nite. at least one was about being at AC...sigh...just about one week left.

friday, may 2

cesky krumlov

took a 4 hour bus ride from prague to a small town called czeckz krumunov. we will explore here then head to vienna tomorrow. definitely a different feel here already than the tourist overrun prague.

in prague went to the alphonse mucha museum...a place dedicated to mucha, who was a really famous illustrator identified with art nouveau. i was thrilled to find out that theres a museum about him here, since i already appreciated his work. now i have a great appreciation for his life...what he did with his work...how he used his abilities to build up a kingdom...he really dedicated the second half of his life to his slav people...was extremely generous and philanthropic and created the slav epic, to instill a communicate and instill a sense of slav awareness and nationalism throughout all of europe. makes me think about what i can possibly do with my creative craftsmanship and the niche that i can fit in the world, to build up a kingdom, and to communicate a vision.

explored last nite. went to a marionnette show which wasnt too hot. dinner was good at dvnamo. great cafe at cafe nuevo. stayed at a nice hotel...more comfortable than the hostel. saw some tv. went out and heard some jazz. then explored the streets a bit after midnight. more to come...
