the new old thing

on the way home from coming downtown, i visited this antique store on 35th and taraval, two blocks away from home. it's called "the attic." right on taraval, about two blocks away from sunset blvd, it's the big orange store on the corner. in all my 24 years leaving at my house, whenever i would hop on muni, i would walk by it, but i've never stopped in...until today.

The Attic was filled with all sorts of "treasures from yesteryears." from what i could gather, the place is run by this one guy over all these years. it's like a massive garage sale with all sorts of stuff from the past few decades. old coca cola bottles, postcards, drinking glasses, records, a teenage mutant ninja turtle dinner tray, paper back books, old signs, nick nacks, do dads, the list goes on... stuff is piled high all over the place. the owner guy had to leave the store and hang out in front, while i went thru the aisles. there's only enough space for one person to walk thru the aisle, and the walking path snakes around mounds of stuff all over the place. i'm glad i didn't knock anything over when i was browsing.

tuesday, november 28

i started my daily "new thang" already! (see previous entry) went to this middle eastern restaurant called "yumma's." 721 irving street. pretty good! had some lamb something-or-other. (i need to start carrying my palm to take notes on these new things!)

tonite, i think i'm going to check cafe abir. noted in the sfbg as reader's best local coffeehouse. divisadero and fulton. hopefully i can get some good lumps logo concepts done and do some reading.

i went for a run today. it was a nice day and i figured that i need some exercise. i also need to be in shape to go boarding this weekend. i ran along ocean beach. i must have ran/jogged/walked/strolled along 5-6 miles of beach. it was pretty nice. a lot of quiet time. going further south, there was no one around. some times i looked around and couldn't see a single person in sight. a great contemplative time.

it was beautiful seeing the sun sparkle like a million different lights around me on some parts of the sand. i also saw some blueish sand...which was kinda cool. probably from pollution or something. maybe i shouldn't have touched it.

i thought about a lot of different things. my fellowship, career path, family, friends, life in general. had a great time praying. i once stopped and sat on some rocks just looking out at the crashing waves and listening to the sounds.

my new thing

i did make one life decision/resolution (and it's not even new year's yet!). i've decided that every single day, i want to have a new experience. something to broaden my mind. get my creative juices going. widen my perspective on life. realistically...i know i can't find time (or afford) to go bungee jumping every day or go on indiana jones type adventures all the time (tho that would be pretty awesome). so every single day...i need to try or do something different or brand new.

to be easy on myself, it could even be something small or slightly ordinary, like...
- reading a new chapter of a book.
- possibly eating at a new restaurant.
- running at a brand new spot that i've never been to before.
(like today. i ran down ocean beach all the way around the bend...to past the sewage plant.)
- having lunch or a really meaningful conversation with someone new.
(hopefully for at least an hour)
- listening to a new cd or radio station (maybe also for an hour).
- seeing theater or a play.
(i wanna see the late henry moss, the new sam shepherd play premiering in sf)
(also planning on hearing the harlem boys choir at the sf symphony next month)
- checking out a brand new coffeehouse. maybe even trying a new drink.
(btw, don't drink this indian fruit drink called shallabat! it's horrible! i tried it an indian cafe on valencia. so terrible.)
- learning to do something new on the computer
(okay...maybe not, that might be a cop-out, since i need to do that for my career.)

if anyone has ideas for me, i'm open to suggestions. i think i now also figured out the purpose of my blog here. it will be to record all of these new experiences. i once had an advertising teacher that highly recommended doing things like listening to different types of music, watching all the new, different tv shows, etc...to really enhance creativity and understanding of our society. definitely something that i should do. i think i'm finally ready to do that. i think this whole stream of consciousness is like a follow-up thought to my last post/weekend when i experienced a bunch of new things.

been a while...thanksgiving weekend was good. besides turkey, i also got my fill of popular culture.

i saw unbreakable wed nite with some buds. i liked it. they didn't. i liked the story line...really made you think afterwards. after an early thanksgiving dinner, i saw bounce with my family, aunt and uncle, cousins, and grandma. friday i went to the auto show and hung out at nite. saturday i saw the grinch.

sunday nite i saw penn & teller at the curran theater. they were great. i always thought that they were funny. they did this one trick where they shot each other and caught the bullets in their teeth. pretty darn cool. they tried to demonstrate that it was real, b/c they supposedly shot them thru glass, had people sign the bullets, and had the stage divided by a huge-ol' yellow ribbon. darn cool.

earlier on thanksgiving day, i vollunteered with lumps to serve thanksgiving lunches at self-help for the elderly in chinatown. it was pretty cool. there were 20 some of us from lumps helping out...along with about 80 other vollunteers. we served hundreds of chinatown elderly who came in three different waves. they even had some live entertainment...some old folks doing cheer with pom poms! :-0 they were dancing and they flipped over cards that had "happy thanksgiving written on it." however...when they flipped over the cards, they read "ing giv thanks happy!"
it was hillarious.

just finished my webtrafficschool finally. it was ok. after completing the online course, i need to go to a mailboxes etc and take a test there. maybe i'll try doing that tomorrow.

thursday, november 9

my b.a.v.c. class is pretty good. there are only three students in the class! i wonder if they would have had it, if there were only two students. probably not.

went to see billy elliott this week. i liked it. supposed to have been the most popular movie in england ever, surpassing the full monty. go check it out.

there are a whole bunch of other movies i wanna check out. pretty much whatever is good out there, and might be up for awards. i'm looking forward to the grinch. go find out your who name at the post office.

i watched the left behind movie on dvd this morning. it was good. describes what's going to happen at the end of the world, when all the christians disappear during the rapture. it was all prophesized in the bible. kirk cameron stars in it. (coincidentally, i saw the growing pains reunion movie this past sunday. i loved growing pains as a kid. it got a little weaker at the end, imo with that new girl chrissy.)

tuesday, november 7

it's a been a while. what's been going on...

- found out that one of my good friends just got hooked up. i didn't see it coming. i wonder if they'll get married anytime soon. very possible. michelle and dan might work out. he would have gone after her sooner if i wasn't around. he thought that i was going out with her! michelle and i were just buds in college. that's all.

- the same day i learned about those two (who happen to be the first pioneer couple in my fellowship group)...i learned that one of my college guy buds my age is now engaged. but he's from so-cal...and so-cal people get married at an earlier age. so i've heard.

- earlier that day, i was skimming my friend's book - boy meets girl. it was a little interesting. the guy who wrote "i kissed dating good bye" changed his views slightly and got married.

all of this was a lot to hit me on the same day. made me really start to think....i don't feel too much pressure now, yet. i think i would in another year.

i'm starting another class tomorrow nite. it's called "designing a dynamic multimedia website." i'm the fourth person in the class. i like small classes. i'm kinda behind tho. i'm supposed to be intermediate level in dreamweaver and flash. i just started really learning the programs this past weekend! we'll see how it goes. i hope it's a good push to help me learn fast.
